About the Book:

After five years on the Marriage Mart, Miss Aquilla Knox is ready for spinsterhood until a benefactress steps in to help her secure a husband. Only Aquilla doesn’t actually want to marry—her failure is entirely on purpose. When the earl she’s nicknamed the Duke of Deception sets his sights on her, she refuses to be drawn in by her attraction to him. If there’s one thing she knows it’s that a gentleman is never what he seems.

Edward Bishop, Earl of Sutton, has a reputation for courting young misses and dropping them without a second thought. This has earned him a reputation for deceit, a description he can’t refute because he does in fact, harbor secrets and will do anything—deceive anyone—to ensure they don’t come to light. As he comes to know the charming Miss Knox, his resolve is tested. However, trust comes at a price and Ned won’t pay with his heart.

Teatime and Books Review

This series just keeps getting better and better! I loved all of the books, but I must say this one is my absolute fave! We meet Edward Bishop, Earl of Sutton at a fancy ball. He and his aunt are engaging in a test of sorts with a prospective bride. At this point he's got his eyes set on Miss Forth-Hodges and although she's very sweet, there's just something about her that isn't fitting. Later that evening, he hears a young woman calling for his help, a Miss Aquilla Knox. He turns to find her outside, drenched. She has gotten herself in a bit of a pickle, having taken a walk outside and getting caught in the rain, she now was thoroughly soaked and didn't want to walk back into the ballroom, she needed to make a clean escape. He goes and unlocks the study door and leads her to the fire. She asks him to go summon a Mr. Satterfield or his wife, who are her sponsors. He finds this young woman quite intriguing and they engage in a short conversation before he sees to her request.

The next day, Aquilla cant' seem to forget about the Earl, even though marriage is not something she's desiring. She wants to become a lady's companion and informs her very good friend of her desire and asks her to help her to learn how to be a lady's companion and find a good position. The Earl of Sutton, knows he needs to seek a wife and has been for sometime. There's just one thing that stands in the way of him finding a suitable wife, his brother George. George has special needs due to an incident some years ago and can sometimes go into spells and at one point caused a fire. So it's imperative to the Earl that he find someone who can accept George, will not be scared off by George and also is mature enough and strong enough to handle George as he's done for all these years. Also, he needs someone who isn't going to go telling all the world about George. So this is the reason behind his test he puts prospective brides through.

So the Earl and Miss Knox meet up again at another party and here he comes to know Miss Knox even more and becomes more intrigued. He later informs his aunt that he's chosen another prospective bride, Miss Aquilla Knox. So now, she must pass all of his tests. However, what the earl does not know is Aquilla's desire to become a lady's companion. Will Aquilla pass all of the Earl's tests? Will she open her heart up to love and consider marriage?

Darcy Burke's writing is just phenomenal, truly one of the most talented authors out there. She grabs you from the first page and weaves a tale of twists and turns, filled with splashes of humor and of course deep passion and romance. From the get go you are rooting for the H and h and drawn into this magical world of Regency England. I highly recommend this book and the whole series!
