Poem Excerpt:

I dumped my love into dirt holes

hoping to plant a tree
but what grew were brittle twigs
and sad, unwanted weeds
all along I simply thought it was just me
that my love grew into pointless things
it’s when I walked between the verdant trees
admiring their grandeur and what I wished to be
that the stones rattled in my chest as my foot slid
into a hole I had never seen, in a place I had never been
with only a drop left to give, I tipped my love in
it sprouted into something more than I ever thought
I could even be
then flowers budded,
reaching every one of my branches
and I blossomed.

Author Guest Post:

What is your writing process like?

I began my author journey in 2016. To date, I’ve written four publications: two young adult fantasy novels (Throne of Lies and Untoward Awakening), a mental health based short story (Agoraphobic: Inside Out), and soon to release, a poetry/prose collection (Dear Wallflower). Interestingly, I learned that these various book genres vary drastically in the writing approach.

In my experience, the novels have been the most challenging of the bunch; requiring uncountable hours, higher investment cost, and a much more demanding determination ratio. My full-length novels with a word count ranging from 80,000 to 100,000 have always included years of diligence, focus, and a fair share of emotional battles with the imposter syndrome.

As a pantser writer, I’ve found that my stories take their own shapes as I dive into the fray. The depth of character arcs and shocking plot twists take form and surprise me as much as the reader. Remember, there is no “right” way to write. So long as empty pages are filled with words to paint a new story, that’s all a writer must do, and it matters none how they got to that necessary end.

However, the process for Dear Wallflower, my poetry and prose collection, was unlike any writing venture I’ve taken yet. While poetry set the start of my love to write, I found that much of my struggles with this new book endeavor was found in the visual direction. I’ve always leaned on my words to lift a story, but in this case, I needed a strong aesthetic and theme to back my words. That provided a new layer of consideration, and in the end, was a great new experience in bringing a book alive.
