The people of Nelebek live in fear of persecution from the evil Morlet, who reigns with a dark and destructive magic. The kingdom’s only hope lies with the Order of the Krigers—twelve warriors with mysterious powers linked to magical weapons.

For over a century, Morlet has been annihilating the Order, picking them off one by one. Eleven Krigers have been hunted down, tortured, and imprisoned in his dungeon. Now only one remains.

Sixteen-year-old Kaia survives by keeping her head down and minding her own business. But when she finds herself in the middle of a public execution where the mysterious Morlet is in attendance, an odd compulsion she can’t resist comes over her when she looks into Morlet’s eyes. Soon, an ancient power awakens, and Kaia can’t blend into the scenery anymore. Will she heed the call of the Krigers or will Morlet’s dark magic destroy the last of the Order?

He cocked his head to the side, studying me. As he waved his hand in an arc, a blast of heat hit me. I cried out and fell to my knees—our eyes still locked on one another.

Was the king using his dark magic on me? My arms and legs shook. I couldn’t stand or tear my eyes away from Morlet’s. The word Kriger was spoken in my head, gently, like a whisper of smoke curling around a branch.

Kriger. This time louder, more forceful, almost accusing. My palms tingled. Something swelled in them below the surface. What was happening? A hand clamped down on my arm, and I was finally able to break eye contact with the king.

“Look at me and focus,” a gruff voice whispered. I glanced at the man holding me. “We don’t have much time.” He released my arm. “Can you touch this?” He pulled out a silver necklace from under his shirt. A large, round medallion dangled from it. I hesitated since I had no idea who this man was or why he was helping me. “Unless you want to be arrested, do as I say.”

“Move!” Morlet roared. He descended the platform and started to make his way toward me.

I reached out and touched the warm medallion. The man cursed.

“Where did she go?” the king shouted frantically, unable to see me through the dense crowd.

“Morlet is coming for you.” The man slipped off his large, fur-trimmed jacket and handed it to me. “Put this on.”
