Every person has a choice. My choice was the only one that would keep me alive.

I fled my home with the only person that has ever mattered to me: my baby sister. It’s my job now to keep us away from danger—to give her a life she deserves. The life that was taken from me when I was only a child myself.

Danger lurks just around the corner. The evil that has been trailing us will not give up. I’m fighting to keep the man who hurt me from doing it again. But I can’t do it alone.

Lost, confused, and determined to stay one step ahead, I seek refuge. I’ve found myself a paradise, surrounded by people who want to help me. One especially.

The one willing to put himself in the line of danger to keep me safe… a man I barely know.

Excerpt:

As I flipped the newspaper over again, I sighed.

“What are we gonna do, baby girl?” I asked the now sleeping baby on my shoulder. The only saving grace was I had my fake ID in my wallet and a few other critical pieces of information. The fake ID only made me nineteen, but it was better than seventeen. It was a very good fake too, which it should have been since it had cost me a buttload of money.

I still couldn’t believe I had it, but right then I was grateful to Katie and Annabelle who had insisted we get them so we could go out to some stupid club in the town over from us a few months before graduation. It was never used until I rented this room though.

I was staying at a little bed-and-breakfast just a few blocks off the boardwalk. It was quaint, quiet, and only five or six minutes’ walking distance from the beach.

The older woman I met when I first came in, Mrs. Raymond, was so very sweet. She gave me a rate for the month, and I paid in full. The lie about being on vacation with my daughter was easy to tell her. Not sure if she bought it all or not, but she didn’t refuse us a room, at least.

I moved from the table and walked to the window. The streets below were slowly starting to see traffic. I needed to go search for a few more shops, plus the bookstore I’d seen a few blocks from here to see if anyone was hiring.

I ran a hand down Tabby’s back, then grabbed my cell phone and shoved it into my pocket. Pushing a few bills from my wallet into the pocket of my shorts, I slid into a pair of sandals, picked up the smaller diaper bag I’d gotten, double-checked I had the things I’d need, and then pulled it on my shoulder. I carefully slid Tabby’s hat on her head and laid her in the stroller. After checking to make sure I had everything, I headed out the door.

Barb is a Carolina girl by right and a Texan by birth. By day she’s a desk jockey for a rural transportation company and a book lover, reading through as many books as she can. At night, though, she turns into her alter ego: a writer—cape optional, depending on her mood.

Her stories are a mix of real-life events, personal experiences, and the craziness of her own imagination and those of her best friends. And when their imaginations blend together, it can be crazy. Barb writes in multiple genres, encounters new adventures, creates new worlds, and has a fantastic time breathing life into new stories, creating something she hopes inspires anyone who reads to fall in love with them as she has.

Barb lives by one little rule: tomorrow is never guaranteed, so make sure you live each day to its fullest.
