Perla felt dizzy. Were there two other employees who contributed to this disaster? It made sense. Beatrix had been hired to assist on video production and didn’t have the programming background to pull off such an elaborate scheme.

Touching her temple, she willed away her looming headache. “You could also use your considerable network to launch an attack against me.”

He flexed his shoulders. “You could do the same.”

She crossed her arms. “Except that I don’t think like that and I don’t have an unscrupulous family member ready to wreak havoc.”

Lucas raised his eyebrows in a direct challenge. “Are you absolutely sure about that? I’d be careful of throwing stones if I were you. Your parents own a trashy tabloid and are well-known for employing all sorts of tactics.”

A flush crept up her cheeks. Her family had plenty of scandals in their past, and among her three younger siblings, there had been mistakes and impulsive acts.

He stood poised for battle, wearing a white pressed shirt highlighting his broad shoulders and flat stomach, tucked into fine Italian-made trousers. She noticed his exquisite handmade leather shoes. He was a giant in the financial world and even though he rarely left his offices, everyone knew him and sought out his expertise. It was believed that a brief conversation with him could bring about millions.

But in this case, her organization had done nothing wrong. “We’re not getting anywhere. And I do have a lot to sort out.”

Lucas glanced at his watch. “Beatrix and I can meet you at your attorney’s office this afternoon and we can sort this out together.”

Perla thought about her brief encounters with Beatrix Braxton. The young woman had seemed hardworking and intelligent. Why would she have gotten involved in something that would cast a long shadow over her future career prospects? Maybe she needed to dig deeper into the entire incident.

A hazy plan began to form in her mind. Lucas had star power and heaps of credibility. The media was fascinated by his looks and his success. “Fine, but if I help Beatrix escape this unscathed, then I do want something from you in return.”
