Linda
Rosen, fitness professional turned writer, lives with her husband splitting
their time between New Jersey and Florida. She was a contributor to Women in
the Literary Landscape: A WNBA Centennial Publication for the Women's National
Book Association and has had stories published in Foliate Oak and Crack the

How
Much Do You Love Revising? Does it Spark Joy?
Many writers, including myself, enjoy revising probably
even more than writing itself. It’s when the real fun begins.
When revising, I’m taking a good draft, or what I hope
is good, and making it better. As in gardening, I weed out what isn’t working
in the story, sometimes an entire chapter, and polish what does. Sir Arthur
Quiller-Couch wrote in On the Art of Writing, “Murder your
darlings." It’s hard to do. Though, when words or chapters I originally thought
were brilliant are finally evicted from the page (after much prodding from my
inner voice or an editor), I see a much better story. And yes, it does spark
joy.
On my desk I have two books in easy reach: Roget’s
Thesaurus and The Emotion Thesaurus. I’d be lost without them. They help me find
the best words and descriptions to make my prose shine. Playing with words and
creating metaphors and similes is simply exhilarating and, for me, it all comes
in the revision.
Some writers let the words spill onto the screen (or
paper) and complete a first draft before revising. And Raymond Chandler once
said, “Throw up into your typewriter every morning. Clean up every noon.” I cannot
do either. I tweak as I write, which makes the process slow. As a fellow debut
author told me, revising is “like watching a baby grow.” My characters start
off as newborns and develop, mature, as I am writing. I learn more about them,
even when not in front of my computer, and I need to get it down. I must revise,
even one word or one sentence, before moving on, to be sure what is going on
inside my character’s head is coming across to the reader. I focus on the flow
of the scenes as well, finding the best way to reveal the story, to give the
readers all I want them to have in the most evocative way.
As I revise and revise, and revise again, I keep in
mind Ernest Hemingway’s answer when asked why he wrote the last page of A
Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times. “Getting the words right,” is what he
said. To me, that is the joy of writing.
