(Hollow Reign, #2)
Publication date: September 1st 2026

My bandmate’s little sister is off-limits.

Then a Christmas blizzard traps us together in Chicago with only one bed.

After months on tour, all I want is to get home for Christmas. Instead, a winter storm strands me in Chicago with Harper Beaumont, a rising ballet star with everything on the line, including the lead role in her company’s production of The Nutcracker.

With both our flights canceled and Harper watching her dream disappear, I do the one thing I absolutely shouldn’t do—convince her to experience the Christmas magic of Chicago.

Somewhere between sparkling lights, one forbidden kiss, and a snow-covered city, Harper stops being my bandmate’s little sister…

and becomes the woman I can’t stop wanting.

When the only hotel room left has one bed, resisting her becomes impossible, sspecially when she asks me to be her first.

One night with Harper is hot enough to melt the Christmas snow but when morning comes and my bandmate finds out I crossed the line with his sister…

I have to decide if I’m brave enough to risk everything for the woman I was never supposed to have.

Silver Bells, Single Bed is Book 2 in the Hollow Reign Christmas Novellas—a series of interconnected, steamy holiday romances that can be read in any order.

EXCERPT:

“So,” she says. “Small problem.”

I cannot fathom any problem bigger than the one that’s currently happening in my pants at the sight of her.

“I don’t have anything to sleep in.” She wiggles the bag helplessly. “I didn’t exactly pack for two overnights. Everything in here is dance clothes. I can sleep in this, I guess.” She shakes her head and sets the bag down on the chair.

Jesus fuck, the universe is loving me today.

“You can’t sleep in your clothes.”

“Well, I think sleeping naked is out of the question,” she says, and I swear she’s not as innocent as she seems.

I clear my throat. “That’s not…” I dig through my duffel bag until I find a Hollow Reign concert t-shirt and hold it out to her. “Here. You can sleep in this.”

She hesitates a beat.

“It’s clean, I promise.”

Her fingers brush mine, small and soft as she takes it and brings it up to her nose. “Smells like you,” she smiles and then disappears back into the bathroom.

Fuck, get yourself together, Rhodes.

What would Casey do if he knew I was in a hotel room with his little sister right now, and that she was wearing my t-shirt? I press my forehead against the cold glass window and try to think about anything—my drum kit, my mom’s tamales, the tempo count on the new single, anything that isn’t Harper Beaumont pulling her sweater off on the other side of that door.

And I wasn’t prepared for the sight of her as she walks out of the bathroom wearing my shirt. Every coherent thought in my brain evaporates.

The neckline slips off one shoulder, and the hem hits the tops of her thighs, revealing soft, smooth legs. She pads over to her bag and stuffs her clothes inside.

“It’s a little big,” she says, pulling on the hem.

I swallow hard.

“Jesus, Harper,” I say, my voice rough. “Are you not wearing a bra?”

She looks down at herself, genuinely confused, then back up at me. “Of course not.” She shakes her head like that’s the stupidest question in the world. “It’s not comfortable to sleep in. Get over it.”

Get over it?

She says it the way another girl would say pass the salt. Like she has no idea what she’s doing to me. Like she hasn’t just rearranged the entire chemistry of the room by walking out of a bathroom in my shirt, her nipples visible through the material.

I scrub a hand down my face.

I grab a pillow off the bed and carry it to the armchair by the window. “I’ll take the chair. You take the bed.”

“Liam, that chair isn’t big enough for you to sleep in.”

“I’ll manage.”

She crosses to the bed and lies down on her side, propped up on one elbow, watching me with an expression I can’t read. The t-shirt rides up her thigh, and I swear to God I catch the edge of lace and the curve of her hip underneath before I have to physically drag my eyes off her.

I rearrange the pillow, trying to smash it into submission.

“Liam,” she says, getting my attention. She’s resting her cheek on her hand. Her hair is spilling across the white pillow, and she looks like a fucking wet dream. “Do you not feel safe in the bed with me?”

Spending the holidays alone for the first time in four years wasn’t exactly on my wish list. But with a major shake-up at work and more changes than I ever saw coming, embracing my new reality seems like the only option.

One thing’s for sure—I’m in no hurry for Christmas to arrive.

Travis
Christmas in the Northeast? In the freezing cold? Yeah, not exactly my idea of home. But turning down this job offer wasn’t an option—it’s the kind of opportunity that doesn’t come around every day.

Still, spending the holidays away from everything and everyone I love is tougher than I expected. And then there’s Callie. I never planned to meet someone like her, let alone work so closely with her.

EXCERPT:

“Callie, I know this isn’t a typical holiday season for you. I can’t imagine how you are feeling now that…things are different without …”

“You can say his name, Hannah.”

“Joey,” she says softly. “I’m sorry. I know this is a difficult time.”

I shake my head. “Don’t be sorry. I asked him to set a wedding date, and he said he wasn’t ready and didn’t know when he would be. That pretty much told me everything I needed to know. Our goals were not exactly as aligned as I thought they were.”

She places a hand on my shoulder and gives it a gentle squeeze. “I’m really proud of you.”

“Proud? For getting dumped?”

“No. For not settling,” she explains. “And for letting me drag you into crazy holiday chaos instead of spending the night alone, binge-watching TV shows you’ve seen a hundred times.”

I laugh under my breath. “You’re not wrong. This is good for me—I always do better when I’m busy.”

“You might even enjoy yourself at the festive family night,” she says, tying another bow in less than two seconds.

“Oh, I’m sure it’ll be a blast,” I say flatly. “Hundreds of children, awkward small talk, and tacky decor. I’m all in.”

She giggles. “By the way, Anna’s new friend is coming with us. Her name’s Mia. She’s such a sweetheart.”

“Cool,” I say, biting my lip as I attempt another bow.

“And her dad’s meeting us there.”

I glance up. “Okay?”

“He’s a very nice guy…”

I narrow my eyes at her. “That’s great. Is there a reason you’re telling me this?”

She conveniently avoids making eye contact with me.

“Hannah…”

“Yes?”

“What are you up to?”

“I’m not up to anything,” she says, innocently. “I just thought it might be nice for you to meet a new friend.”

I stare at her. I should’ve known she was up to something. She was very insistent that I go to the festive family night.

She shrugs. “Anyway, he’s single. And nice. He has a good job. And he’s very—”

“Stop right there,” I interrupt. “No setups. You promised.”

“I didn’t set you up,” she says. “I merely mentioned that a single, employed man who also happens to be a devoted father will be in the same vicinity as you.”

“Oh, well in that case,” I say, rolling my eyes again.

She smirks and reaches over to take the mangled ribbon from my hands. “Here, let me help. You’re not exactly grasping the bow tying process here.”

“I didn’t get Mom’s crafty gene like you,” I mutter.

She laughs. “No. But you certainly inherited the moody gene from her.”

“I’m not the only one,” I tell her.

She holds up a perfectly wrapped box, complete with an elaborate gold bow. “See? We make a good team.”

“Always,” I say. “You do the work, and I’m here for moral support.”

EXCERPT:

Sloan Lancaster raised the hood of his jacket and raced through the downpour, skirting the water overflowing dips and deep potholes in the asphalt parking lot. This, plus the rundown brick and wood exterior, was all he needed to conclude that the Winding Creek Rehab and Care Center was past its prime. Especially dreary was the aging paint job, once white, but now a dull, dirty gray. Sloan summed up his first impression of this facility in one word: neglected.

As he ducked into the hands-free revolving door a commotion in the lobby caught his attention. Women and men in scrubs or lab coats were pushing and pulling furniture across the carpeted floor, while a couple of burly guys in maintenance uniforms dragged an oversized tarp into the far corner of the room where rainwater ran down the wall.

Two women a few feet in front of him struggled to pull a couch across the middle of the lobby. He approached from behind and called out, “Wait, let me help with that. Tell me where you want it.”

A woman spun around. “Thanks. We can use the help.” Her eyes opened wide in surprise. “Sloan?”

“Bethany?” He struggled to find his next words as he grasped the wooden armrest on one end. “I’d know you anywhere.” It was true. He hadn’t seen her since high school and she’d barely changed at all.

Not the time to ask a lot of questions. He made his early morning workouts pay off as he dragged the couch to the only empty spot on the other side of the lobby big enough to accommodate it. The space was already filled with a hodgepodge of tables and armchairs that had escaped the leaking roof and ceilings.

Bethany pushed the couch from the other end. Her expression turned serious as she straightened up and put her hands on her hips. “You’re here to see your dad, I assume. Medical transport brought him here a couple of hours ago.”

Her burgundy pantsuit and crisp tailored white shirt gave her a professional look in the style of the women lawyers at his firm. That led Sloan to guess that his old friend Bethany Hoover was an administrator in this place, where, for better or worse, his dad was now a patient. The worn out exterior and general disarray in the lobby weren’t filling him with positive feelings about that.

The opposite, in fact.

EXCERPT:

With a playful glance at Carter, Alina slipped the small gold ring on her finger. It fit perfectly. She admired the filigreed design of clasped hands and held up her own. “What do you think?”

Carter frowned at her. Of course he did. His voice was rough when he spoke. “What are you doing?”

Alina shrugged. “Having some fun. You could try it. You do know what fun is?”

His frown lines deepened into furrows. If he wasn’t careful, he’d look old before his time.

Determined to help him avoid that fate, Alina teased, “Don’t you ever have fun? Here.” She held out the larger ring to him. It too, had a design of clasped hands.

He raised a disapproving brow. “You want me to put on some old wedding band.” It wasn’t a question and the censure in his voice was obvious.

“Sure, why not? What are you afraid of?”

He tilted his head. “I’m not a commitment-phobe if that’s what you’re implying.”

“So, put it on.” She issued the challenge to see if he’d accept.

“We are not making a commitment.”

“No, we are playing. Fun, remember?”

When he just stared at the ring, she added, “I dare you.”

Carter’s eyes narrowed. “You dare me?”

“That’s right, I dare you.” She was back to playground taunts, but this time Alina didn’t care because it really was fun. And he needed to lighten up.

Carter tilted his chin up for a moment before he narrowed his eyes at her and slipped the ring on the third finger of his left hand.

It went on easily like hers had. “See, perfect fit. I wonder where they came from.”

“They’re old, I’m certain.” Carter gazed down at the ring on his finger. “I’ve seen pictures of this type of ring somewhere. Traditional workmanship but surprisingly comfortable. Okay, time to get back to work. Fun’s over.”

“Fun should never be over.”

Carter tugged on the ring to take it off. He blinked, tugged harder. “That’s odd. It went on so smooth, and now it’s stuck.”

EXCERPT:

“Do you know who Everett West is?” Madelaine asked.

Everyone with access to a television knew who Everett West was. He’d been a globe-trotting war reporter for the past thirty-five years.

“He’s writing his memoir,” Elle responded. “We are serializing it in the magazine. The number of readers downloading the chapters has quadrupled over the past three months.”

Helen beamed at her. “Impressive. You know your stats about other aspects of the magazine besides your own.”

“The serialization is meant to whet the appetite of readers in hopes of getting them to order the book when we release it in July,” Madelaine explained.

“The problem we have,” Helen added, “is that Everett hasn’t quite finished the manuscript despite signing a contract stipulating he would complete it by the first of this month.”

“Oh.” Elle looked between the two women, still unsure what this had to do with her.

Helen shook her head. “Mm. Men aren’t always good at keeping their promises as I’m sure you are aware, Elinor.”

Whoa!

Was Helen apologizing for her worm of a grandson?

Madelaine leaned forward in her chair. “We need Everett to finish this book by the end of the year, or the magazine will run out of material to serialize.”

“And we won’t have any way to fulfill those preorders,” Elle added.

“Exactly!” Helen slapped her palm on the table.

Elle continued to gaze at the two women, trying to divine some sort of explanation as to why they were telling her this. “That’s a serious problem for the entire company.”

“Everett doesn’t seem to be able to focus on the manuscript here in New York.” Madelaine sighed. “Too many distractions.”

“Too many cronies to go out drinking with, you mean,” Helen muttered.

If Madelaine agreed with her boss’ sentiments, she was too professional to show it. “We need him to go someplace quiet, someplace with a lot slower pace and fewer diversions so he can buckle down and get the job done.”

The man had reported from deep below the ocean inside a Polaris submarine, while rumbling along in a tank in Iraq, and even while embedded in the Afghan desert with special forces. Surely, he didn’t need a convent to finish his memoir? He already knew the ending, after all.

“Do you need me to research some potential places?” Elle asked.

“No, no, dear girl.” Helen waved a hand. “In fact, Jeremy gave me the most brilliant idea earlier this week when we met for dinner. He was reminiscing wistfully about the wonderful times he spent when you two visited your mother’s inn in North Carolina.”

Elle tried not to bristle. Why would Jeremy be “reminiscing wistfully” about the Tide Me Over Inn? He only visited there twice. Now that she thought about it, both times he found something to complain about—from the inn to Chances Inlet. He’d found the whole town to be “provincial.”

“My mother’s inn? You want Mr. West to go there to finish his book?”

Both women nodded.

“Um, sure. I’m happy to check with her to see what openings she has. Christmas time is usually as popular as the summer months in Chances Inlet, though. I can research some backup inns just in case.”

Please, Mom, don’t let your inn be full.

“No need.” Helen grinned. “I’ve already spoken with your mother. She’s arranged a suite for Everett through the end of the year.”

“Oh.” Elle was surprised her mom hadn’t said something to her. “That’s great. Do you need me to make any other arrangements for him?”

“Everything is all taken care of.” Helen stood. “You’ll both be flying out first thing tomorrow. Everett has less than five weeks to finish his damn book. I’m counting on you, Elinor, to see that he does. If it comes down to it, chain him to a chair. Stand over him twenty-four hours a day. Whatever it takes.” She gave Elle’s shoulder a gentle squeeze as she walked past. “I know you’re up to the task.”

The publisher was out of the room before Elle realized the impact of her words.

“Wait. What?” she whispered. “No, no, no.”

EXCERPT:

Another thirty minutes passed, during which time Brant envisioned thick slices of smoky ham encased between fluffy biscuits hot from the oven as he worked. He was just about to suggest to Remington they take a break for the noon meal when a woman as pretty as any Brant had ever encountered breezed into the room carrying a large basket covered with a blue-checkered cloth.

“Denver! I thought I’d never find you in this colossus of a house. I saw Colin outside, and he said you were in the library, but so much has changed since the last time I was in here, I thought I might wander around lost until you starved to death.” The woman’s gaze shifted from the carpenter on the second floor, taking in Brant and Remington as they hastily stood. “Oh, hello.”

Denver scrambled down the ladder where he’d been working on the trim at the top of a bookcase. Brant was surprised he didn’t fall and break his neck the way he skipped the last four rungs, using just his hands on the sides of the ladder to slide to the floor. It was a trick Brant intended to have Denver teach him another day.

“Holland, I didn’t know you were coming today. I would have met you outside.” Denver glanced nervously from the young woman to Brant, and then back to the fetching female as he raced down the spiral staircase.

The woman shrugged. “We wanted to surprise you.”

Did Denver have a wife and children awaiting him at home in Silver Bluff? In the three years of Hudson House’s construction, Brant had gotten to know the names of every worker and thought he had a thorough mental list of those who were married and those who were not. How had he overlooked Denver’s family? Especially when the man had such an attractive wife?

Shiny brown hair she wore pulled back from her face, fastened with a ribbon at the nape of her graceful neck, fell in glorious waves to her waist. Freckles splattered a narrow, upturned nose. Her bottom lip, fuller than the top, rested in a natural pout that was most alluring. Her brown eyes snapped with intelligence and interest when they landed on Brant again. Her features were delicate and decidedly feminine, and she owned such a happy countenance, it made Brant want to smile just being in the same room with her.

Denver Drake was a most fortunate man if the woman holding a basket from which delicious aromas emanated was, indeed, his wife.

“Who might this be, Denver?” Brant asked, taking a step closer to the couple, curious and oddly interested in the answer.

“Holland Drake,” Denver said, taking the basket from the woman and giving her a slight nudge forward.

A wave of disappointment washed over Brant. So, she was married to Denver.

“My sister,” Denver continued.

The desire to raise his fist and cheer was almost more than Brant could contain, but he managed to tamp down his victorious feeling and school his features into what he hoped was a welcoming expression. The lovely woman was not married, at least not to Denver.

“Miss Drake,” Brant said, closing the distance between them and taking her hand in his. He raised her slender fingers to his mouth, pressing a kiss to the back of her hand while holding her gaze.

Her eyes widened slightly, though he could see curiosity lingering there, and she quickly pulled her hand away. “I haven’t seen you working around the house before. Are you new?”

It was on the tip of Brant’s tongue to tell her the truth. To say he was the one who would eventually live in the house that had once been a dream scattered across multiple sheets of paper. Instead, he decided he wanted to get to know this woman, not as the owner of a fancy home, but as one of the many men helping to build it.

“I’m not new, but help was needed in the library today.” That wasn’t a lie, but the stark truth. He and Remington would likely contribute countless hours of physical labor if the house was to get finished by his own self-imposed deadline prior to his sister’s holiday arrival.

“Mister …” Denver started to speak up, but Brant gave him a brief shake of his head along with a warning look. The young man swallowed hard and nodded once in understanding. “Mr. Hudson is hoping to be able to use the library soon. It will also serve as his office, and he’d like it to be the first room completely finished. That’s why we’re all working so hard to make that happen.”

EXCERPT:

“Man, I suck at this,” I blurt out, while on a jog around the perimeter of the Fall Fair with Jesse. We started hanging out years ago after our sisters became BFFs.

“O-kayyy…” He elongates the word, briefly cutting his eyes in my direction. “Do you care to elaborate?”

“Ugh, at romancing a woman. It’s like I forgot how to do it, since I haven’t dated for years. Before Kylee, Roxanne was the only woman I’d ever loved. Actually, now that I think about it, I’m sure Roxanne put the moves on me first. Which means, I have no game. Dang, I’m doomed.”

“I assume you’re talking about romancing Kylee? Tell me what happened before I give my opinion on the situation.

Shaking my head as we run past a seven-foot scarecrow and two smaller ones along the jogging trail, I try explaining. “It’s bad; really bad,” I huff. “One minute, we were sipping wine and cuddling on the sofa after an amazing French meal she made, and the next, something completely different than what I had planned to say came pouring out of my mouth.”

“Oh, gosh, what’d you say?”

“I said something like… if it’s not clear that I want us to have a future together and to, uh, share a house so we can do more stuff like this—”

“Stop!” We quit running as Jesse steps to the side of the trail. “You’re right, you do suck at this.” He chuckles. “That’s the worst thing I’ve ever heard a guy say to the woman he loves. What was her response?”

“It wasn’t great. She didn’t say anything at first, so I added, unless it’s not something you want. Finally, she grabbed my hand and said she’d love for us to live in the same house, but then she looked confused after she said it.”

“Man, I can definitely see why. You need to watch some romance movies or something because you’re right, you have zero game with the woman you want to spend the rest of your life with.”

“Geez, thanks for the vote of confidence, buddy,” I quip. As we resume running, I’m suddenly feeling worse than I did before.”

EXCERPT:

A ring.

Not just any ring, a rose gold band.

“What are you doing?” I whisper, a little harshly, the ring pulsating in my peripheral vision.

“We talked about this, remember?” Luke’s voice drops, rasping.

“We talked about marriage.” I tilt my head to one side, as if I’m physically dividing this argument in half., “But not this, and not in front of them.”

“You’re being modest.” He laughs, tossing a look back at his parents. “I thought it would be nice to share this moment with them.”

“You did?” my voice squeaks, as I’m totally blindsided and wishing I had at least a heads- up. The arrangement had sounded so much more business casual than what’s going on right now. A proposal on one knee is not business casual. This is my heart in my throat, and I’m about to throw up. “Where did you get a ring?” I hiss.

“I bought it today.”

“Today?” I grapple for my throat, praying something gives before I pass out.

“Yeah, today when I was thinking about you.”

Doing a hard pause on the word, you, he’s still holding the ring awkwardly in his hand. I frantically search his face for signs of a prank, but he doesn’t have an ounce of humor curved into a smile.

He’s one-hundred-percent serious.

Quakes rumble against my rib cage. This is an act. I’m clearly about to blow our cover as I’m acting so confused, but this whole thing is blowing my mind. “This is happening so fast.”

“It’s okay. Better than okay.” He takes my hand in his, holding it in front of him. “Ten years ago, you kissed me on a dare. You didn’t know it at the time, but I was already falling in love with you. You were my first kiss, but I knew in that moment, I wanted you to be my last.”

I blink. Everything about his proposal sounds genuine.

My gaze floats to his mom; her hands clasp together in front of her, but her gaze is piercing in my direction. Luke’s dad has a that’s-my-boy grin laced on his lips.

And Luke!

Luke’s winning an Oscar for his acting. His gaze dials right into mine, like it’s boring a trail through my eyes right to my heart. I can’t even tell it’s a fake proposal, and I one-thousand- percent know it’s fake.

It is fake . . . right?

Book Tour ~ Journey to Bethlehem by Joseph Guy

Religion & Spirituality

Date Published: 11-25-2022

Publisher: OACC Media

Come with me to Bethlehem. A sleepy hamlet in the mountains of Southern Israel. Here we will find a newborn baby lying in a manger surrounded by his parents and barn animals.

It doesn’t seem like the most idyllic Christmas. There is no tree, no presents, and no stockings hung by the fireplace. Everything is ordinary. Jesus lying in a mound of hay is the furthest thing from extraordinary. Yet, the Savior of the world begins his first moments here in this barn, in this village.

During this journey, you will discover the true meaning of the season. It’s not the glow of lights or the smell of pine needles. We celebrate Christmas because of Jesus Christ, God’s gift to us.

Excerpt:

The blessing that God spoke over Mary was not just for her only; it is a blessing that God speaks over us daily. When you are faithful in the everyday routine of life, you are highly favored by God. The Holy Spirit confirms the promise that God is with you by leading and guiding your steps. Stop living as if you are what you will always be right now. God has not brought you this far just to leave you. Rise and declare that if God before you, who dare be against you. Children of the Most High King must live as if they are royal heirs. They do not live based on their life circumstances; they live based on their Father’s character. Embrace the highly favored life by submitting your steps to the King and trust Him to work all things out for your good and his glory.

Book Tour ~ It's A Wonderful Dog - A Christmas Tail by Keri Salas

A Christmas Tail

Animal and Holiday Fiction

Date Published: November 16, 2023

Publisher: Acorn Publishing

It’s Christmas Eve in western Kansas and a snowstorm is gaining strength as Bear Bailey, a devoted Great Pyrenees, tries to comfort his beloved owner Mary. She’s in hot water with the local business villain, and Bear’s earlier altercation with this miser only seemed to make things worse. When Mary blurts out that she wishes for a different life, Bear blames himself for her despair and runs away.

Meanwhile Jiff, a Labrador patiently waiting for his own human to meet him at the Rainbow Bridge, sees Bear shivering alone in the blizzard. Knowing Bear won’t survive the night without intervention, Jiff agrees to act as Bear’s guardian angel on Earth. He is determined to show the Great Pyrenees what the lives of the humans around him would have been like without his presence over the years.

A holiday “tail” for those who love the season but feel the deep loss of loved ones (both furry and human), It’s a Wonderful Dog shines a light on the power of love and community, and reminds us that miracles do exist.

One

SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW BRIDGE

As it happens with each sunrise over Earth, a bridge of colors formed among the swirling, dark blue rain clouds. Faint at first, then, as the moments ticked by, shades of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet deepened in glistening radiance. The rainbow rose over the clouds, widening across the expanse, and bringing with it scores of humans and dogs. Their eyes were filled with surprise as they turned in wonder at the beauty around them.

“Do you think the colors of the bridge are brighter today?” Lea asked. The angel, with an affinity for all things relating to dogs, looked with great thought at the slow, spinning display of colors.

“It’s near Christmastime. There’s much happiness on Earth but also a great deal of sadness,” Josephine answered. “Many tears. More rain. Deeper colors.” The two angels had overseen the Rainbow Bridge for centuries and had an all-knowing understanding of the souls crossing over, as well as events on Earth pertaining to dogs. “What are you seeing?”

“Bear Bailey is in grave danger. Without our help, he’ll join us here on the Rainbow Bridge at Christmas,” Lea said.

“The Great Pyrenees from Kansas?” Josephine asked.

“He’s in a dark place. It’s getting harder for me to keep focus on him from up here. Someone has to go and help.”

Prayers on behalf of Bear Bailey had risen to Heaven in a continuous stream all night long. The words of requests from a whole community of people reflected their frantic concern that he be found and returned home by Christmas.

“Are there any dogs here who might help Bear Bailey?” Josephine asked.

Rows and rows of dogs sat expectantly as the rainbow continued to grow, their tails synchronized like pendulums in a clock shop. The giant breeds of Great Danes, Saint Bernards, mastiffs, and similar sized dogs aligned themselves at the back of the crowd in consideration of the smaller dogs. Without so much as a bark, the dogs arranged themselves so that even the very smallest poodles and Chihuahuas at the front had a clear view waiting for the rainbow to fully expand. A single black Labrador sat to the side near the front of the group. His feet danced in anticipation as his eyes locked on the moving rainbow.

“You and I both know which dog can best help Bear,” Lea replied. “But he won’t go as long as he’s waiting for his human to arrive.”

The rainbow’s expanding movement came to a gentle stop. Josephine raised her hands, flourishing them in the air. A burst of golden light carried the newly arrived humans’ scent onto the breeze. Myriads of dogs’ noses tilted upward; their eyes closed as they began to sniff in hope of recognizing their human’s scent floating on the air. Men and women, and even small children, descended from the bridge along with a pack of newly arriving dogs, all looking into the sea of waiting furry faces.

As the humans drew nearer, most of the dogs barked in welcome but then turned away, not recognizing a familiar scent to run toward. The dogs arriving that day at the Rainbow Bridge without their humans joined this group and followed the morning sun leading them back to the rolling land of the “Golden Meadow.” Running through the unending lush fields, flower-filled valleys, and gentle hilltops would help them pass another day of waiting until they reassembled again for the next sunrise.

The remaining dogs in view of the Rainbow Bridge who connected to a scent in the air heard their name shouted by a beloved voice from their memories on Earth. Joyful mayhem ensued as dogs ran to the people they loved, zigzagging between one another, barking in excitement when their patient loyalty was rewarded. Somersaulting, barking, and laughter filled the area, along with tears of happiness and relief.

“I can’t believe I get to watch this every morning,” Lea said, wiping a tear.

One by one, the humans and dogs connected like strong magnets. The bigger dogs tried to maintain the impeccable manners they’d learned while on the Rainbow Bridge, but inevitably lost control of their emotions and toppled their laughing humans. The smaller dogs jumped into the outstretched arms of people crying for joy, licking their faces as they, too, forgot all etiquette. Among the happy reunions, the black Labrador ran from group to group, sniffing the ground and air around them for any signs of familiarity. He tugged a few sleeves and pawed at the backs of people turned in the opposite direction in an effort to see a face until he’d exhausted all possibilities of a connection.

“This is the element of the morning that gives me pause,” Josephine said, her eyes on the Labrador. “His human has not come this morning. I wonder what we can do to divert his attention from his sadness.”

“You know you can send a giant squirrel offering a platter of bacon and Jiff will not be dissuaded from watching the bridge, Josephine.”

In a short time, like a giant card shuffle, humans reunited with all of the dogs from their lifetime and continued their journey past the Golden Meadow to whatever the human had conceived Heaven to be during their lifetime on Earth. The Rainbow Bridge faded from sight and disappeared entirely for the day.

Jiff ran the length of where the rainbow had been, barking into the expanse, searching the clouds as he whimpered.

“He’ll stay there until twilight,” Lea said.

“He’s still our oldest dog here?”

Lea nodded. “By a couple of decades.”

Josephine began walking toward the Labrador. The smell of sunshine after spring rain filled the air as she spoke. “I’ve never seen such devotion. His attention never wavers.”

“I’ve tried everything, but he wants nothing else but his human.” Lea had crossed the Rainbow Bridge as a human nearly a millennia before and had begged to stay on, so great was her love for dogs and her desire to see their deepest wishes come true.

“What a good boy,” Josephine said, moving across the sky effortlessly in a blink. She knelt to Jiff, opening her palm to reveal a dog treat.

The Labrador sniffed the tidbit and turned away, leaving it in Josephine’s hand. She closed her fingers around the morsel making it disappear.

“You know you don’t have to eat here, Jiff. But many of the dogs love the taste of their favorite foods on Earth. It helps them pass the time,” Josephine said.

His brown eyes were solemn and wide as he shook his head. He turned to the sky again.

“It could be any day now, Jiff,” Lea said, her voice encouraging and cheery.

“Tomorrow?” Jiff asked, his ears lifting.

Josephine scratched the top of his head and worked her way back down his neck where she massaged his shoulders. “We only ever have a general idea, Jiff. Souls decide themselves when their journey is over.”

“I’m tired of waiting,” the dog said, putting his head down and sighing.

Lea cleared her throat and tilted her head to Jiff, raising her eyebrows to Josephine.

“We have something we’d like you to consider, Jiff. You don’t have to help but we have a Pyrenees on Earth in urgent trouble,” Josephine said, motioning downward. “He’s already one of our favorites.”

Jiff lifted his head and sniffed. “Why?”

“Bear Bailey has a particular knack for uniting everyone,” Josephine said. “He brings out the best in the people around him. They’re devasted he’s lost. Here, have a quick look.” Her hands in the air like a skilled artist, she moved the clouds in such a way that the vision of the Great Pyrenees appeared in front of the trio almost as lifelike as if he’d crossed the bridge that morning. In the background, quick flashes of various people praying in earnest for the dog’s safety, crying and pacing in their homes below appeared in the vision, along with their personal memories of Bear. Jiff watched the fast-moving scenes until they disappeared.

“We can’t help Bear from up here,” Lea said.

The Lab looked up at the angels in confusion. “You both handle everything here on the Rainbow Bridge. Why not Bear?”

“You know Josephine and I have to wait for arrivals each morning.”

“You’re both powerful. There must be a way,” Jiff said.

“We can only ‘see’ so far down on Earth, Jiff. With our attention here on the Bridge, we can’t always connect completely to a dog’s life on Earth,” Josephine said. “That’s why we’d like to send you to help Bear. Our ambassador, so to speak.”

“I’ve never heard of you sending a dog from the Rainbow Bridge to help on Earth,” Jiff said, beginning to lick his paws in nervousness.

“We actually have done it a handful of times,” Lea said.

Jiff looked unmoved and sat silent in the best way he knew to be polite but not give the impression he was agreeing to go.

Josephine looked at Lea, knowing her empathy for dogs was a much-needed skill in convincing Jiff. Lea loved on all the dogs crossing the Bridge each day. In addition to her love, she was almost a dog herself, so she communicated with them in a way they seemed to understand.

“Your record on Earth shows what an immense helper you were, Jiff,” Lea began. “Once a good boy, always a good boy,” she said, smiling, hoping to cheer the Labrador.

Jiff whimpered and began to cry. “He’s scared. I can feel it.”

“Bear Bailey?” Lea asked.

He shook his head. “My human.”

“That’s curious. You shouldn’t be able to sense that here. Only what we show you,” Josephine said. “I think your mind is making you believe you can see what you can’t.”

Jiff looked up at her. “It gets worse every day. I’m worried he won’t make it.”

Lea’s face fell. “Do you think your human is bad? You shouldn’t worry, Jiff. They’re almost all just scared and trying their best. “

“My human has always been very good.”

“Then what is it?” Lea asked.

“He fell off a bridge,” Jiff said, shivering as if he’d just emerged from ice-cold water.

“But you saved him,” Josephine said. “You pulled him from a river when he couldn’t swim. He would have died without you.”

“How did you know that?”

“We don’t know how we know, but we always know on the Rainbow Bridge,” Lea said.

Jiff swallowed hard. “He’s terrified of bridges. And the bridge to Heaven is the biggest one of all.” He began to pant heavily.

Josephine felt the dog shaking through her touch on his fur. “The Rainbow Bridge is much different from bridges on Earth, Jiff. When humans see and feel the immense beauty of the Rainbow Bridge, it washes away all fear, any sickness or pain, leaving only happiness and hope. That helps a human let go of things on Earth and be curious and excited about what lies ahead. Especially when they believe they can see their best friend again.”

Jiff began pacing, this time with renewed vigor. “I know what I feel, and it’s my human in pain. He must be ready to cross the Rainbow Bridge. You’ll have to find another dog to help Bear so I don’t miss him.”

“Jiff needs a purpose to distract his mind,” Lea whispered to Josephine. “Even a day of waiting is agony to him.”

“I think we can solve two issues at once,” Josephine said quietly before turning her attention back to the Labrador. “It’s your choice, Jiff, but walk with us before you decide, and let me tell you a story about a wonderful dog named Bear Bailey.”
