Excerpt

Indi’s eyes opened slowly when she felt a pinching sensation over her heart. When she focused on what was in front of her, a flood of memories came back to her. She was drowning in them, barely keeping her head above dark water as she remembered what she had forgotten. The dank smell of death in that alleyway haunted her senses, her memories. She kept thinking this was the end—this was what death felt like, what death looked like. Death was a… “Vampire,” she whispered. Nox’s head snapped around, his pearlescent eyes penetrating hers so completely that she couldn’t look away. Unequivocally, she knew he was the one who had dragged her into the alleyway. He was the one who had attacked her, snapping her collarbone and draining her dry. Burning pain brushed through her left shoulder, her body remembering the injury even though it had already healed. Swallowing, Indi forced the fear from her eyes. “You killed me,” she breathed. It wasn’t often that someone got an opportunity to come face to face with their killer. “I did, but I didn’t get to give you your Final Death. I’m here to finish the job.” He drove the blade in, drawing blood that caressed her like a warm finger down her skin. Indi was still helplessly weak, but it didn’t stop her from trying to push him away. Nox batted her hand away as if it was nothing more than an annoying insect. He leaned into the knife, pushing the blade in farther. Indi held in the scream as Nox applied more pressure, grinning down at her as he took perverse pleasure in ending her life. But she hadn’t survived so much just to give up now, and she wouldn’t leave Beth behind either; she had suffered enough. Summoning her strength, and with both feet, Indi kicked one of his kneecaps, pain exploding through her own legs as she felt like she’d just kicked a brick wall. Nox stumbled back a few steps, the pressure of the knife disappearing. He bared his fangs and advanced on her again, but she didn’t have the strength to physically fight him off. Her eyes darted left and right, searching for her knife briefly. That was when a growl vibrated down the alleyway, causing the hairs on the back of Indi’s neck to stand on end. There was a dark blur and a curse and Indi blinked as she took in the scene directly in front of her. Standing over Nox was a giant, black dog. Its fangs were bared in Nox’s face, Nox returning the favor, revealing incisors four inches long. Spittle hung from the dog’s jaws, landing in thick, sticky strands on Nox’s cheeks and forehead. Nox’s eyes were glowing as he fought back against the animal. Using the wall to brace herself, Indi stood up shakily. She tried to move away from the pair, but when a piece of glass crunched under her shoe, the dog turned around to stare at her; its lips curled back from its teeth in challenge.
