EXCERPT:
Hale
navigated her expertly through the streets of the city. Charlotte had long
since lost track of where she was, but felt safe and protected with Hale, her
hand still firmly tucked in his. And as they walked, they talked. He told her
about his parents and his love of cooking, much to the chagrin of his childhood
friends. She told him about her over-bearing mother, always wanting to control
her life, but held short of telling him about her modeling experience. She
wanted to leave that part of her life behind, starting today, and Hale would be
the first person who knew her for who she was and not what she did.
They
crossed a side street and approached an extremely tall building, one that made
Charlotte shudder just by looking up at it.
“Are
you OK?”
Hale
asked. He wrapped his arm around her and looked into her eyes when he asked.
She
took a deep breath. “Yeah, I’m OK. I’m just not a big fan of tall
buildings. I have a completely unrealistic, unfounded, but real fear of
heights.”
“Oh,
is that all?” Hale chucked.
Charlotte
smacked him playfully across the chest and then drew in a deep breath as she
felt his strong, firm muscles. “Don’t make fun of me.”
“I’m not, Charlotte. Really, I’m not. It’s cute.”
“So,
what building is this?” she asked, looking
up at the star-filled sky, pointing to a skyscraper with a distinct top.
“The
Empire State Building,” Hale said. “Isn’t she gorgeous?”
“Oh
wow,”
she
said. “I
hadn’t realized we’d walked so far.”
“I’m sorry. I just wanted to spend time
with you.”
They
came to a stop on the sidewalk, and Hale pulled her close to him, leaning
against the window of a storefront. “It’s alright. I’m not complaining. I was just
surprised. I wanted to spend time with you, too.”
Charlotte
lowered her head, embarrassed she was being so bold. Despite her desire to step
out of her shell and recreate herself, her gentle-bred southern roots were dug
deep. Hale started walking again and she happily slipped her arm through his.
“So,
what are you doing in the city for just one night, Charlotte Taylor?”
Charlotte
stiffened a bit at the question. She’d
hoped to leave this part of her life behind but realized she probably needed to
face it in order to move on.
“Well,
I was in town to meet with a modeling agency.”
