About Smooth:

If only life came with a guarantee.

Patrick McNaughton wants more. More people drinking Foghorn’s beer, more money to push their brewery past the competition, and more cooperation from his brothers, who have no sense of urgency. He’s all about conquering one challenge on his way to the next, so long as there’s a remote chance of winning. That’s why Aspen Pane sits in the office down the hall, oblivious to his attraction. Patrick has always wanted more with her, but he never was one to risk it all.

Aspen Pane has more than enough. As business manager for Foghorn, she keeps the brewery in the black and lives up to the nickname the McNaughton brothers gave her—Wonder Woman. She’s worked hard her whole life for the money she now has in the bank, the small house she calls home, and time with her friends. So, even though it seems everyone close to her, including her brother, is inconveniently falling in love, Aspen sticks with her to-do list. Because love risks everything and she doesn’t do that for anyone.

After an unexpected flight and an eccentric venture capitalist thrust them into a battle of wits and lies even they’re not sure they can win, Patrick and Aspen must learn the difference between making a connection and making money. They may need to face their fears and risk it all in the name of finding a new work-love balance.

“I’m a pirate, lass. What am I supposed to think when I come into my room and a lass has made herself at home, going so far as to take off her boots?”
She pushed against him more, and he did let go slightly, enough that she thought she might be able to draw a better breath, but it didn’t appear that his hold was what kept her from breathing. Struggling to speak without choking, she said, “I came here because I heard ye were looking for the bastard of Santiago Fernandez.”
“And ye claim to be that unfortunate offspring?”
She nodded solemnly. “I do.”
“Prove it,” he growled.
“How?” She wriggled against him. “Put me down first.”
“Say something to me in Spanish.”
He settled her in front of him, but not far enough away that she couldn’t still feel the heat of his body sinking into hers. Thinking quickly on her feet, Alesia frowned up at him. “My mother was Scots, and my father, the legendary Spanish pirate, abandoned me the moment he planted his seed, ye buffoon. Where would I have learned his language?”
“Point taken.” He studied her face, eyes narrowed. “Ye do have the look of him. In a feminine sort of way. Save for that hair. Tempestuous hair.”
Her mouth fell open at the insult. She moved to stomp on his foot but quickly found herself lifted off her feet, arms pinned to her sides by the steely strength of his own.
Fine, he wanted to play dirty. She’d already showed him once she knew how to take down a man. Alesia moved to kick him where she’d had the pleasure of socking him before, but Captain Thor clamped her legs between his thighs of steel.
“Uh-uh, princess,” he mocked.
Though she hated to head-butt anyone for the headache it always gave her, that was her next move. Alesia was fairly certain at this point she wasn’t going to be walking away with the silver, which meant she could at least walk away with her life—and figure out another way to escape the wharf.
Before she had the chance to make good on her decision to crack her head against his, she found herself flattened to the wood-planked floor, and his massive body on top of hers. Every hard plane pressed to the soft curves of her own. She sucked in a ragged breath, prepared to shout at him to leave off, but she found her throat too tight to speak.
“I’d have expected more from Santiago’s daughter, wee sprite.” His finger trailed over her cheek and along her jawline.
Alesia bared her teeth, trying to wriggle free but only managing to feel his body pressed harder to hers. “And I would have expected more from a pirate Captain.”
“Touché.” His grin was inviting. Unnerving. Disarming.
“Get off me,” she growled, trying keep her mind in the right place—the angry place. That was survival. To succumb to his disarmament was to lose.
His gaze shifted to her lips. “Not without a kiss.”
Alesia snorted and shoved at his unmoving shoulders. “I’d not kiss ye if ye were the last man on earth.”
“What if I were the second to last?” he teased.
She let out an exasperated groan. “Not then, either, ye ogre.”
He clucked his tongue. “Shame.”
“Why’s that?”
“Because, lass, if sparring with ye is this fun, kissing would be even better.”

Teatime and Books Interviews Bestselling Author Loree Lough

We sat down with Bestselling author Loree Lough to discuss her latest release and just a chat about books!

1.     Describe a typical writing day. Are you a morning, afternoon, or night-owl writer?

In my crazy world, there is no ‘typical writing day.’ Since this is my full time job, I write constantly. When a book deadline looms, I write at all hours of the day—sometimes for 14-20 hours straight! Funny thing is, I don’t have a favorite time of day to work, although I’ll admit that I enjoy the silence that comes with writing beyond the midnight hour…

2.     Can you tell us about your current work-in-progress?

I’m working on three separate projects right now. The first is anything but a romance, even though there are romantic elements during several scenes. If asked to classify it as a specific genre, I’d choose ‘action-adventure, political thriller.’ The second is a historical, set in Idaho during the 1850s, shortly after the railroad made its way west. The third is something an editor (and my agent) asked me to write. It’s very hush-hush at this point, but I can say this: It’s a contemporary romance series that’s very different from other romances I’ve written!

3.     What inspires you when you’re writing?

The work, itself, inspires me. I love watching characters come to life. Love using words to draw pictures of them, and of the scenery around them.

4.     What’s your favorite item on your writing desk?

My dictionary! And if I have any in the house, chocolate!

5.     What’s your favorite genre and why?

I guess I’d have to say Romance. Even for writers whose work falls into other categories, there’s usually a romance of some sort in their stories. Same goes for movies. Songs. Stage plays.

6.     Any advice you have for a blossoming author?

You’ve no doubt already heard the usual advice: Read, read, read. Sign up for how-to write classes. Attend writers’ conferences. Join a critique group. While all of those things are helpful, you need to be alert for the stumbling blocks you’ll hit along the way. Some come in the form of distractions and interruptions (and you’ll just have to accept some of those). And some come in the form of snarky comments: “Are you STILL working on that book?” and “How nice that you have a sweet little hobby!” Still others fall into the so-called helpful advice category, when you show your story to your peers and hear “Close, but no cigar.” Most hurtful and damaging of all are naysayers who spout nonsense like “Fiction is a waste of time, for the writer and the reader. I only read things that broaden my life!” (I’ve yet to read a novel of any genre that didn’t add something positive to my life!) You need to develop a thick skin to deflect negative statements like that. But deflect it you must! Believe in yourself. Believe in your story. Believe in your talent. And never, ever, EVER quit!

Teatime and Books Review: The Duke of Her Desire - Diamonds in the Rough by Sophie Barnes #Historical #Romance #New #Release #Books #Reading #Avonromance #Avonbooks #HarperCollins

He was only supposed to keep an eye on his friend’s sister . . . now he’s about to lose his heart . . .

When Thomas Heathmore, Duke of Coventry, agrees to steer his friend’s inexperienced younger sister through society, he doesn’t expect the lady in question to be so infernally stubborn. Amelia Matthews seems to have little interest in balls or suitors at all. Instead, she intends to open a school, and against his better instincts, Thomas offers to help. Yet somewhere along the line, Amelia ceases to be a simple responsibility . . . and becomes an undeniable temptation.
Since her brother inherited a dukedom, Amelia’s prospects have transformed. But though she’s long been secretly infatuated with Thomas, she refuses to heed the arrogant aristocrat’s advice. If only it were as easy to ignore his heated touch. And as Amelia soon learns, the ton is a minefield, where one moment’s indiscretion can unleash a scandal—or entice her to surrender everything to the duke of her desire . . .

Excerpt:

Chapter 1
Huntley House, London, 1818

When Thomas Augustus Heathmore, 3rd Duke of Coventry, came to call at Huntley House one Monday morning, the last thing he expected was to find the Duke of Huntley’s sister, Lady Amelia, sprawled on her backside in the wet grass.

And yet that was precisely what happened, thanks to a bit of serendipitous timing. Because he’d actually been heading toward Huntley’s study. Except the French doors at the end of the hallway stood open, allowing him to hear Huntley’s youngest sister, Lady Juliette, shout, “Careful!” at precisely the right moment.

It was the sort of warning that could not, nay, should not, be ignored, so it was only natural for him to walk past the study where Huntley’s butler, Pierson, stopped to knock, and continue on through the French doors to the garden.

“Oh my goodness!” Juliette exclaimed. Her eyes met his from behind a beam of muted sunlight that sifted through between the branches of a nearby elm. His gaze swept sideways, falling directly on Lady Amelia just as she turned to stare up at him. Her eyes widened a fraction, filling with something he could not define, before looking away as she pushed herself up off the ground.

He felt the edge of his mouth twitch with amusement. “I see you’re putting your sister-in-law’s advice to good use.”

Lady Amelia rewarded his comment with a glare, which was unsurprising, considering the Duchess of Huntley had been trying to teach Lady Amelia proper comportment for the past month.

Having spent most of their lives in the slums of St. Giles, Raphe Matthews, the Duke of Huntley, and his sisters, Amelia and Juliette, had found their lives turned upside down when their brother had inherited his title. Since their arrival in Mayfair, they had all been doing their best to adjust themselves to Society’s expectations, which as Thomas understood it, had not been easy.

“Is it not fashionable for young ladies to have grass stains on their skirts?” Lady Amelia inquired in a dry tone. She swiped her hands against her gown, leaving streaks of moisture and dirt upon the white muslin.

“Not as far as I am aware,” Thomas replied. Looking her over, he couldn’t help but sigh at her messy appearance. “I trust you are unharmed?”

She gave a slight nod, prompting a chestnut curl to drop dramatically over her forehead. It bobbed in front of her hazel eyes until she blew it aside with a puff of air. “Quite,” she muttered.

“Well then.” He shifted his gaze to Lady Juliette, who appeared to be admiring the roses with great intensity, before addressing Lady Amelia once more. “That is the most important thing.” He paused, observing how flushed her cheeks had gotten, before he asked, “Will you tell me what happened?”

A moment passed before she pointed toward some branches in a nearby tree. “I was returning a fallen nest and ended up losing my balance.”

He nodded. Of course that was what she’d been doing. She was invariably compelled to help the less fortunate creatures of the world. According to her brother, she’d taken in several stray cats, for which he’d since been forced to find new homes. “You should probably have asked the gardener to assist you,” he said. After all, climbing trees would not improve her reputation. Especially since the garden shared a fence with Green Park, and anyone strolling along the nearest path might witness her unorthodox behavior.

“Of course.” She crossed her arms, and he wondered if he ought to say something more.

After all, what sort of friend would he be if he didn’t offer his honest opinion? He pondered that thought for a moment and finally told her, “I would also suggest you remove those twigs from your hair and put yourself to rights. It will be calling time soon.”

A Huge, Dynamite 5 Teacups for The Duke of Her Desire by Sophie Barnes. What a sweet, loving, yet deeply passionate tale! I fell in love with Thomas and Amelia immediately! Their chemistry will ignite the pages ablaze with passion and a deep love. However, it takes some time for Thomas to give in to his desires and Amelia's stubbornness is so distracting, yet also draws him in. He's been asked to help his best friend's sister through society in order to wow the ton and find a husband. However, he doesn't bargain on falling for the young miss himself. Will Amelia give into her growing love for Thomas? Will Thomas see past her feisty stubbornness and embrace her in his arms forever?

Barnes' writing is absolutely stunning in this tale. Such detail to characterization, plot, and she weaves such a scenery of words that rivals any master painter! Truly a remarkable author and one you will want to keep your eye out for! I highly recommend this book, it will make a great addition to any booklovers library!
