My connection with Teresa began at IMD (International Institute for Management Development), where her transformative coaching work has left a lasting impact on our leadership programs. Teresa Ferreiro-Vilariño is the Founder and CEO of Kimberlite (https://www.kimberlite.es), an innovative organisation dedicated to providing comprehensive support to people navigating cancer—particularly within corporate settings—through professional coaching. A Master Certified Coach (MCC) accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF), Teresa brings more than 20 years of experience working with leaders and organisations worldwide.

At the age of 36, a breast cancer diagnosis marked a turning point in her life, redirecting her focus toward empowering people living with cancer. In the years that followed, she authored her first book, I Have Breast Cancer–What Now?, recognised for its inspirational and practical guidance, embraced motherhood, and founded a charitable initiative supporting young women navigating motherhood after cancer. She later earned a PhD focused on applying professional coaching methodologies to the specific needs of people facing serious health challenges. In recognition of her commitment to patient advocacy, she was honoured with the European Patient Champion Award by EyeforPharma in 2019.

About the Author

 

 David Kerr grew up in the small, rural community of Enon Valley, Pennsylvania, in the '50s and '60s where the main source of employment was farming or working in the steel mill industry. Surrounded by families who struggled to maintain their middle- class lifestyle and hold tightly to the American values of God, family, and country, little did he realize that these people and places would become the inspiration for his novels.

A graduate of Georgia Southern University, Kerr served as an English teacher and school administrator for forty-four years. Following his retirement, he wrote and published two mystery novels, Secrets of Crick Road Bridge and Storms of Crick Road Bridge.

About the Author

 

 Michael Leppert is an award-winning lecturer, columnist, essayist, and author based in Indianapolis, Indiana. A longtime communicator, public affairs professional, and educator, Leppert brings decades of experience in government, policy, business, and storytelling to his work.

He teaches speech and writing at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and serves as an adjunct professor at IU’s O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs. He earned his B.S. in Public Affairs from Indiana University and his M.S. in Communication from Northwestern University, building a career rooted in the two fields that have shaped his life: government and communication.

Before entering academia and writing, Leppert spent thirteen years in public service for the State of Indiana. His career began at the Indiana Boys School, where he worked for five years and later served as program manager in the Intensive Treatment Unit. He then spent eight years at the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, ultimately serving as Executive Director of the IURC. In that role, he became known for his ability to explain complex and often controversial issues with clarity, insight, and accessibility.

After leaving state government in 2002, Leppert spent two decades as a private-sector lobbyist, public affairs consultant, and communications advisor, working with corporations, nonprofits, government leaders, community organizations, and business executives to help advance strategic priorities. His experience with public policy, political systems, and institutional decision-making has deeply informed his fiction and nonfiction writing.

Leppert began writing a weekly column in 2014, with his work appearing in newspapers throughout Indiana. His first book, Contrary to Popular Belief: A Chronicle of a Progressive in Indiana, was published in 2016. His novel Flipping the Circle, published by Greenleaf Book Group in 2021, is a political thriller that draws from his deep knowledge of Indiana politics, lobbying, and government culture. His fiction explores power, corruption, identity, morality, and the complicated human stories behind public life.

At the heart of Leppert’s work is a passion for helping people understand complicated ideas through story. Whether in the classroom, in public commentary, or on the page, he is driven by the belief that storytelling can bring clarity, challenge assumptions, and create meaningful connection.

The Beginning (1966)

 

Cecilia adjusted the strap of her purse as she walked along 86th Street under the El, the scent of fresh Italian bread and coffee drifting from the corner bakery. Car horns, laughter, and the distant rumble of the subway filled the air, but her mind was focused on the errand her mother had sent her on. She was to pick up a spool of thread from the fabric store and then head straight home. Simple. Routine.

Just as she arrived at the corner of Stillwell Avenue, she stopped short at the sight of him. Through the large glass window of the neighborhood gym, she saw a man, his dark hair slicked back, his muscular arms flexing as he lifted a pair of weights. Stunned, her breath caught in her throat. He was unlike any man she’d ever seen before—confident, strong, and completely engrossed in his workout. A few girls near the gym’s entrance were watching him as well. Giggling, they stole glances in the man’s direction. They were animated and giddy, but Cecilia was rooted in place, unable to move, unable to look away.

Then, as if sensing her gaze, he turned. Their eyes met through the glass.

Cecilia’s heart thudded in her chest. For a moment she considered looking away and pretending she hadn’t been staring, but something about the man’s expression—the amused smirk, the spark of curiosity in his eyes—held her there. Slowly, deliberately, he set the weights down and wiped the sweat from his brow. Then, to her surprise, he walked over to the door.

Cecilia panicked. She knew she should leave, turn on her heels and pretend this never happened. But before she could make herself move, he was walking straight toward her.

“Enjoying the view?” he asked as he approached, his voice deep and playful.

She felt herself blush. “I was just passing by.”

His smirk widened. “Sure you were.”

She folded her arms, trying to steady herself. “Well, are you going to tell me your name?”

“James,” he said, offering his hand. “And you?”

“Cecilia. Cecilia Russo.”

Their hands met, and an undeniable current passed between them. Cecilia swallowed hard. She had heard about men like him—charmers, flirts, troublemakers—the kind of men her mother had warned her about.

And yet as he held her gaze, none of that mattered. Awestruck, Cecilia could only think about this man named James.

“I’ve never seen you around here before,” James said, tilting his head slightly. “Are you new to the neighborhood?”

She shook her head. “No. I live a few blocks away. My mother sent me to the fabric store.”

James grinned. “Exciting afternoon, then.”

She laughed despite herself. “Not quite as exciting as lifting weights in front of an audience.”

He chuckled, stepping a little closer. “I don’t mind an audience, especially when it includes a girl as pretty as you.”

At the compliment, Cecilia fought again the urge to blush. She should have walked away. She should have smiled politely, excused herself, and continued on her errand. Instead, she lingered, drawn in by the easy confidence in his voice and the way his eyes darkened when they met hers.

“I should go,” she murmured, though she made no move to leave.

James studied her for a moment and then cocked his chin just a bit. “Alright. But let me walk you to the store.”

She hesitated, knowing she should refuse. But despite her better judgment, she found herself nodding. And so they walked side by side, the summer sun casting long shadows on the sidewalk as they went.

That evening, as Cecilia and her family sat down to dinner, her sister Linda quietly scolded her: “You shouldn’t talk to men like that.”

Their mother, Concetta, bustled around the kitchen scooping out steaming portions of pasta, oblivious to the conversation between the twins.

“Daddy would’ve had a fit if he’d seen you flirting this afternoon with that guy outside the gym,” Linda continued.

Cecilia rolled her eyes but kept her voice low. “I wasn’t flirting.”

Linda snorted. “Please. You didn’t realize it, but I was by Mr. Morelli’s soda shop a few doors down. I saw the way that man looked at you—and the way you looked at him.”

Their father, Leo, sat at the head of the table. He was a man of principle, his presence alone commanding respect. He was unaware of the tension building between the twins. The girls were always whispering, and he took no notice of it.

Cecilia had spent her life trying to be the good daughter, the obedient one. But this evening, for the first time, she felt a pull toward something—someone—that didn’t fit neatly into her world.

Cecilia’s family was loving but strict. Her father was a retired boxer and former Navy man, and he ran their household with a firm but caring hand. He had worked tirelessly to provide for his family, instilling discipline and respect in his children. Their home was warm and filled with the aromas of baked ziti, sautéed broccoli rabe, and chicken parmesan, but there were many unspoken rules. Cecilia knew those rules well, and today she had broken one of them for the first time.

Then there was James and Cecilia’s first real date. It was anything but ordinary. James pulled up to the corner of her block—out of sight of Cecilia’s parents—in a sleek, black 1965 Pontiac GTO, its polished chrome gleaming under the streetlights. The low rumble of the engine sent a thrill through Cecilia as she slipped into the passenger seat.

She had told her parents she was going to the movies with Linda, which wasn’t a complete lie—Linda was coming along. But their parents didn’t know anything about James or their real plans for the evening, and her parents certainly didn’t know that James was bringing along his friend Tony as a date for Linda.

Linda sat in the back seat, exchanging flirtatious glances with Tony. Cecilia could hardly focus on anything but James’s hand resting casually on the gear shift. He drove with an effortless cool, weaving through the streets of Brooklyn in the evening light.

As they reached Coney Island, the scent of salt water and fried food was thick in the air. The two couples walked along the boardwalk, the sounds of carnival rides and laughter surrounding them. James bought Cecilia some cotton candy, his fingers grazing hers as he handed it over. The touch sent a shiver through her. They wandered through the games where James easily won her a stuffed bear. When they rode the Wonder Wheel, he rocked their seat just enough to make her laugh and grip his arm.

As the night stretched on, Cecilia felt the weight of the rules she was breaking, but with James beside her, it didn’t seem to matter. The way he looked at her, like she was the only girl in the world, made her forget everything else.

When they pulled up to a spot just a few doors down from her house, Cecilia noticed that the porch light was on—a reminder of the world she had to return to. James leaned over, brushing his hand against her cheek. “I had a good time tonight,” he said.

She beamed with delight, her heart pounding. “Me too.”

For a moment, it seemed like he might kiss her, but instead, James simply grinned.

“Sweet dreams, Cecilia.”

The weeks flew by, and Cecilia never told her parents about her new boyfriend. She swore Linda to secrecy. Her twin often covered for her. As Cecilia got to know James better, their stolen meetings became more frequent, and their conversations got deeper.

It wasn’t long before one night, parked at a secluded spot near the Verrazzano Bridge, James kissed Cecilia with an urgency she had never known before. The city lights shimmered in the distance as his hands traced her skin, each touch setting fire to her senses. She knew nice girls didn’t do this, that she was breaking both her parents’ rules and God’s. Yet she gave herself to him completely, believing in the moment, believing in him.

"So what would you say if I told you I was here to make every dream you've ever had come true?"

SM didn't even glance up from the magazine he was flipping through. Not that he'd been paying attention to the glossy pages. The skin magazine was designed for seriously lecherous and perverted types. Lots of pink, pouty things that kind of made his flesh want to shrivel up and his brain run away to hide. Still, better low-class reading material than none at all. Nothing else to do on the graveyard shift, was there?

"I'd ask if you were either AWOL from the City Genie conglomerate, wonder what you were selling, and pray you were the guy with the coffee I ordered --" he checked his watch -- "an hour ago."

"One out of three ain't bad." A cardboard tray smacked down on the hotel check-in counter. SM gladly abandoned his perusal of the so-called literature to reach up and grab a paper cup.

On his way, he spared a glance for the delivery boy. Not bad. Not bad at all. The kind of boy-next-door good looks that got his motor revving... or would if it weren't right around 3 a.m. Nothing short of an earthquake could get him excited enough to do much of anything this time of day.

He raised the lid and took a sip -- then choked. "This is cold!"

The delivery guy shrugged. "Well, you did it order a while back. Is it my fault it took this long to get away from the late-night crowd to bring the stuff over? And why did you order four cups, anyway? Have you got someone stashed under there?" He leaned over the counter, as if to check.

SM hastily knocked his magazine off into a trashcan. "No!"

"Come on, a hunk like you? There's someone under there." The coffee guy tilted up and over, resting his belly on the ledge, peeking. "Is that what I think -- no, just your shoe. Interesting. You dress like a wage slave drone, but those are some snappy sneakers."

"Sometimes I have to run to put out fires," SM replied dryly. Which was true enough. On more than one occasion, he had, especially when Combustion Man got too worked up. Oh, he didn't usually set more than the beds ablaze, but someone had to be quick on the draw with an extinguisher.

The truth was he wore the sneakers because they were comfortable, and it was one way of giving management the finger. Not that he'd admit it, of course, to a diner jockey.

He paused. "A hunk like me?"

"Well, yeah." Once he'd gotten up there, the coffee guy sat on the ledge, swinging his own sneakered feet back and forth. "You're a definite hottie. At least an eight on a scale of one to ten. Why do you think I waited to bring your coffee over myself?"

"To be annoying?"

"There is that," Coffee Guy agreed cheerfully. SM didn't see any harm in calling him that. It was neatly printed on his diner nametag, pinned crookedly on his tight-fitting T-shirt. "It's one of my better attributes."

"I'd hate to see the worse ones." SM took another sip of the brew. He blinked. "It's hotter."

"Thanks." Coffee Guy flexed his muscles. "I kind of thought so, myself."

"No, you dolt. I meant the coffee. It's not as cold anymore." SM took a careful sip and almost burned his tongue. He looked up accusingly. "Okay, give. How'd you do that?"

Coffee Guy shrugged. "It's a city full of real comic book heroes, right? Just about everyone and their brother has some kind of freaky power. I have dominion over the almighty bean, blessed be the name of Java. Behold." He pointed at SM's cup, which refilled the slight distance back up to the lid. "Talk about your never-ending pot."

"You're kidding me." SM drank again. "How'd you get a sweet talent like that?"

"As if it's special." Coffee Guy snorted. He started to flick through the check-in register. "All it gets me is the graveyard shift at a hotel diner. Or is this a motel? I can never keep it straight."

"Hotel. They have hallways and doors that open from the inside. Motels open onto the street."

"You learn something new every day."

"Keeps the brain active." SM peered at the cardboard tray with his other three, now steaming, cups of coffee. "Do you have the ability to summon cream and sugar as well?"

"Somehow I knew you'd be the kind of guy who had a sweet tooth." CG grinned at SM and reached into his pockets. "Wasn't room on the tray, but I came through in the clinch."

"Oh, God. You're an angel." SM groaned in pleasure as he cracked open two still-cool plastic cup-ettes of condensed milk and poured them in his cup. The sugar came next: three packets. "Swizzle stick?"

"They're not called swizzle sticks, moron."

SM cut CG a sharp look. "Oh, yeah? What's the right name, then?"

"Hell if I know." CG swung his legs a few more times while SM fixed his coffee to his pleasure. He even whistled a few bars of a tune, pretty badly off-key. In the middle of a bar, just as SM was recognizing the melody, he broke off to say, casually, "I kind of figured you to be the kind of guy who likes cream."

At thirty-five, Jax was all hard muscle and scarred knuckles from years of bar fights and border runs. Back in the day when they were more of an active outlaw club and he and his brothers responded to conflict with violence. These days they tried to be more diplomatic in how they handled shit. None of them wanted to do prison time.

Up ahead, he saw hazard lights blinking on a stalled sedan that was pulled off to the shoulder, steam hissing from under the hood like a pissed-off serpent. A woman stood next to it, one hand shielding her eyes from the glare, her sundress plastered to her curves by the heat. He gaged her age to be somewhere in her mid-twenties, her honey-blonde hair tangled from the dry wind. He appreciated the tits straining against the thin fabric, and her legs that went on forever. Jax's cock twitched in his jeans as an image of how those legs wrapped around his waist while he fucked her would feel. He slowed, the bike's growl dropping to a low rumble. Fuck, look at that ass, he thought, the familiar hunger coiling low in his gut, hot and insistent.

The intensity of his reaction to her caught him by surprise.

He killed the engine twenty feet away, his boots crunching gravel as he swung off. "Car trouble, sweetheart?" His voice came out gravelly, laced with that outlaw drawl, eyes raking over her with heated interest, and without shame.

She shut her mouth abruptly, the sparks in her eyes extinguished as she retreated once more into the mask of a composed, distant lady. He despised when this happened, as it did ever so often when he approached her. He lived for the moments he could tease her, to break her composure, to see those eyes light up, even if it was in disdain or scorn.

Wolf knew himself to be an unrepentant rake, undeserving of John’s friendship or loyalty. Despite this self-knowledge, a fierce, uncharacteristic longing arose in him at that moment: he wished for someone to argue so passionately on his behalf, to proclaim him a good man.

Remembering himself, Wolf discarded such a maudlin thought.

“I am not obligated to explain my motivations to you, Lord Wolfridge.” Her tone was meticulously polite, yet beneath the kindness, he detected a veiled reproach that ignited his blood.

“And yet…” he went on as if he had not heard her. “Your white knight is not here. Nor has he been here in a very long time.” In her eyes, a battle of pride, hurt, and anger raged, and for a moment, he nearly regretted his casual cruelty. Yet, there was a purpose behind his malice.

“You more than anyone know he is busy.” Petra spoke quietly, her words clipped. “I have long wondered why you do not share the same sense of industry as Lord John.”

Indolent. The word lurked in their conversation and Wolf again regretted pushing this issue to the surface. A lord does not dirty his hands with work. He takes what he wants and leaves the work to others.

Ignoring his father’s tedious voice, which always stirred a confusing mix of feelings, he redirected his thoughts to his best friend, John Longley. John possessed all the virtues he lacked: he was honorable, kind, and diligent. He would despise him if John weren’t like a brother to him. Why did the notion of Lady Petra marrying John trouble him so much? It was none of his concern.

Yet, he couldn’t let it go.

“Has he not communicated that to you himself, Lady P?” he asked, relishing the way his lips popped on the P. He could swear he almost saw a tick of her jaw at his use of the sobriquet bestowed upon her by the gossip rags.

“As we have established, Lord John is very busy, my lord. He does not have time for frivolous goings on of the ton,” she said more firmly this time.

“And yet, my lady, I can see the small seed of doubt this might cause you.” He watched her jaw almost tick again, and for a brief moment, savored the victory of being right. “Does his absence not pain you, Lady P?” He wasn’t entirely certain of the outcome he wanted from his teasing, but he relished the rare opportunity to be able to read her expression.

Her eyes met his, and he was struck again by the intensity of her gaze as it searched his face. He felt her assessing his intent, seeking any hint of malice or desire to hurt her. In that moment, he understood that such an aim was entirely absent from his heart. Wolf could not quite articulate the purpose of his banter, but an instinct told him Petra and John would not suit. It was patently clear that John possessed not the slightest inkling of the gravity with which Petra had regarded their supposed understanding.

John’s ignorance was not due to neglect; in fact, he was one of the few gentlemen who didn’t seem inclined to constantly leave his wife behind. Rather, he had been distracted by some persistent, unspoken melancholy, as though his mind and heart were fixated entirely on someone or something else. Wolf suspected, however, that the cause of this melancholy was not Lady Petra, given that the look of longing vanished whenever her name was mentioned.

Staring into Petra’s mahogany eyes, a plan came to him. Devious, perhaps, a bit underhanded, but one that would prove to Petra that she and John would not suit.

“Let me court you,” he blurted out.

For once, Lady Petra’s entire face showed what she was thinking as her mouth fell into an almost perfect “O.”

She really was rather adorable. Where did that thought come from? “Adorable” was not in his lexicon. As she began to regain her composure and start to form a reply, Wolf followed his initial, impulsive request before she could respond. “Not a real courtship, mind you, just something to shake Lord John into the parson’s trap. Fearing he might lose you should hasten the nuptials, yes?”

In truth, this ruse would not hasten the betrothal, but help free John, and ultimately free Petra.

Why he wished her to be free, he was not going to examine too closely.
