About the Author

Jeffrey Mechling was born in Alexandria Virginia to a family full of secrets. His maternal grandfather was thought to be an original member of the OSS [The Office of Strategic Services].

Other members of the Mechling and Emerson families, as well as family friends, lived within the shadowy world of espionage and would only revealed that they "worked for the government".

Mr. Mechling himself has worked as a Financial Economist and Operations Research Analyst with a not too secret government agency.

Jeff has written three novels - The Adults in the Room, The Safe House and The Decoys. All three feature super spy couple Tim Hall and Mary Ann Wilson.

She brushed her hand along her stomach, then grabbed her grinder. A large portion of the sandwich disappeared between her teeth.

He frowned. What was that about? He opened his mouth, then snapped it shut. Her back off vibe was unmistakable. He clutched his mug of spiced tea, and the insulated ceramic protected his hands. Steam wafted across his face, the scent of cinnamon and cloves opening his nasal cavities. He sipped the drink, the liquid burning his throat, warming him from the inside out.

What had happened to her? While they were waiting in line at the ticket booth, a faraway look had tightened her face and chilled the air around them, which had nothing to do with the temperature. The same mystery pain now narrowed her eyes and tipped her lips in a frown.

He missed the girl she once was, but what did he know about the woman? So much time had passed. How had he managed to get through his days, the long years, without thinking of her every second?

“A penny for your thoughts?” Harmony licked a dab of brown mustard from her finger.

He rolled his cramping shoulders. “Just thinking about the past, the mistakes I made, the things I wish I could change.” Shit. Where was the super glue for his mouth?

If he had the chance to go back in time and fix things with Harmony before their relationship skidded off the rails, he wouldn’t. He couldn’t, no matter how much he wanted to. He loved Andy and Kay more than anything. Without Susannah, he wouldn’t have his kids.

“I’ve missed you, Harmony.” He reached across the table and grasped her hand. “You’ve been through a tough time, so we should stop flirting. I want to be friends again.” His shaft throbbed in rebellion, the stubborn thing.

She slid her thumb across his knuckles, shooting sparks up his arm.

“I know.” She opened the door and scooted out of the car before he could run around and open it for her. Rei turned and waved at him.

Trey winked and sped off.

Rei pivoted around and dropped her jaw at the size of Maribelle’s house. It was huge, with a u-shaped driveway. There was a small porch, arched overhang over the door. She was likely the last one there tonight since she had to work and talk to Trey. She climbed the few steps and rang the doorbell.

Ivy opened the door holding a champagne glass with a fuzzed pink drink in it. She squealed. “Rei’s here!”

The inspiration for the story came from Sandie's beloved father who worked in various psychiatric hospitals during short periods of his career. In the attic of one such hospital, he made a disturbing discovery - one that bothered Sandie so much, she had to create a story around it. Though fiction, many parts of the book intertwine the patient routines, treatments and outbursts that she learned from her father and other research in a way that makes the story vivid through Jeannie's perspective.

“Not until you’ve heard this!” Arun started playing a tune on his guitar and the entire dorm fell quiet.

He never took his eyes off her the entire time that he sang Hey You, his parody of Hey Jude. Had she always been this beautiful?

“Who the hell is singing at this ungodly hour!” the matron shouted from somewhere. Raj continued to sing, not flinching at all. Arun, on the other hand, was not feeling as confident as Raj.

“Raj, we should go!”

“I am going to break every single one of your bones, you rascal!”

“Raj, run! She will catch you!” yelled Ankita.

Raj smiled. She cared about him.

He continued to sing.

“It’s you again!” The matron was on the lawn now, brandishing a large broom in her hand ominously.

“Raj, we should go!”

“Keep playing! Na nanananana!”

He started running, the matron after him.

“I am done here,” said Arun and ran away into the darkness.

“Na nanananana!” Raj continued to sing while running around in circles in the lawn, the matron closing in. Some of the girls watching the moment unfold started singing with him. “Na nanananana!”

“Raj, what are you doing?” yelled Ankita. “Go back!”

“Na nanananana!” The entire dorm building sang.

“I…love…you…Ankita!” he shouted as he ran, his breath running out. “Give…me…a…chance!”

“I am going to break your legs, YOU RASCAL!” The matron flung the broom at Raj.

“Na nanananana!”

“For god’s sake, run! I will go out with you! Just once! Go now!”

The entire dorm building erupted.

“I love you, Ankita!” said Raj as he broke into a run. “Na nanananana!” he continued to sing as he disappeared into the darkness.
