A
week passed with no sign of Logan, but his gifts were everywhere she turned.
Parcels of food on her patrol runs, a recent CD from her favorite band, a
sequel to the book she was about to finish, a scarf as red as blood, the
matching fingerless gloves the next day, a toy wolf with copper eyes tucked
into her bed. Gift after gift, each one a chip in her armor until she couldn’t
even pretend to scowl when she found one anymore. Logan was winning. His plan
was working, and when Mia came home that day to find a jewelry box with the
matching necklace to the bracelet she’d bought herself months before in the
center of her bed, she knew it had to stop. If Logan wasn’t coming to her,
she’d go to him. And maybe if he was lucky, she’d only spill a little blood.
Driven
half by a need that scared her and anger that burned, Mia crossed from River
Run into Dark Shadow without seeking permission beforehand. Unsurprisingly,
she’d reached the edge of their inner circle when Bass merged from the shadows,
Katalina not far behind him.
“Where
is he?” Mia asked, forcing herself to take a beat. To speak with respect.
“That
depends. Will I still have one of my best men standing by the time you’re
finished with him?” Bass asked, his lips lifted just a fraction to tell her he
found the whole situation amusing.
“Don’t
be silly, Bass. She’s only going to talk to him. Aren’t you, Mia?” Katalina
answered. She wasn’t amused; in fact, if Mia was reading her correctly,
Katalina was concerned. Who for, Mia wasn’t sure.
“Honestly,
Katalina, I’m not much of a talker,” Mia replied, sliding her hands into her
jacket pockets casually while her insides were crawling with the urge to hunt
Logan down. “He’ll live. I can promise you that.”
“He’s
east of here. If you’re unable to track him, he’s too good for you,” Bass said
matter-of-factly.
“Bass.”
Katalina slapped him lightly, shaking her head.
Mia
gritted her teeth, her fingers curling inside of her pockets. It wasn’t in her
nature to let comments like that slide. “You know, if you weren’t Dark Shadow’s
alpha, I might take offense to that statement.”
Bass
surprised her by laughing. “Don’t let that stop you. I like a challenge.”
She
smiled. “I think I’m going to like you.”
Dashing
east before they could reply, Mia’s wolf rose to the surface. Taking in her
unfamiliar surroundings, she soon caught his scent on the breeze. Earth and
warmth and a scent that was uniquely Logan, he was a drug to her senses, a
caress to her soul. Slowing her pace, Mia went predator quiet and stalked her
prey. Wolf in her eyes, a smile on her face, this was the best kind of hunt.
