Lawson McDowell was almost born in the backseat of a Buick, but after a wild ride through the wheat fields near Dodge City, Kansas, they arrived at the hospital in the nick of time. That was in 1950. It seems Lawson has been in a hurry ever since.

When he was five, his family moved to Texas, establishing roots in the small town of Andrews, where his father worked in the oil industry. Lawson grew up with rattlesnakes, cowboys, and roustabouts in the rough-and-tumble oil boom years of the 50s and 60s.

After graduation from Texas Tech University, Lawson went to work for Southern Pacific Railroad. He advanced through the ranks, eventually leading operations in Los Angeles, Tucson, and Kansas City. “Don’t do that,” I say. “Don’t shut me out.”

“Go away,” she warns.

“No,” I say. “Talk to me, Sammy.”

“You lose all the fucking time when you push everyone away,” I say, my voice cracking under the pressure of each word. “Isn’t it worth trying to stay for once? To work through it rather than shut me out?”

“I’ll never be what you need,” she says. “I’ll never be able to give myself to you completely, to trust you fully.”

“Bullshit,” I snap.

“It’s not bullshit. You made a mistake ever thinking you could change me.” She sighs before hammering the final nail in our coffin. Her eyes locked on mine full of honesty and meaning. “I was your biggest mistake. You’re just too stubborn to acknowledge it.”

Astrid is interested in minority group questions, considerations on social standards of beauty and the negative consequences these have, and would like to make the fantasy genre accessible to people of non-white, non-Christian backgrounds. Astrid feels the fantasy genre has become too restrictive with limited representations of race, ethnicity and culture. She seeks to explore other paths on this writing journey, incorporating her background in anthropology and psychology to create engaging experiences, which also provide food for thought on the diverse topics she finds most important. These include: racism, minority rights, cultural diversity, culture change, intolerance, humanity’s environmental impact, the representation of people on the autism spectrum in among the general populace, the human capacity for transformation, and much more.
