‘Wait here.’ Nino dashed towards the door.

‘Antonio? Where are you going?’

‘I need to talk to that guy. Anything happens, anyone turns up unexpectedly, you phone me straight away, okay? Even if it’s just a gut feeling. You have good instincts, you know that?’

She smiled. ‘I will. I’ll call straight away. Thank you, Antonio.’

‘For what?’ He opened his hands as if to say that he hadn’t done anything.

‘For being by my side through all this. It isn’t easy, and I really appreciate it.’

‘It’s the least I can do. Besides, I always knew we’d make a good team.’ The sincerity in his grey-green eyes set off butterflies in her stomach. If she let herself go, if she ignored reason and followed her need, she’d allow herself to drown in that gaze forever, the way she wanted to before she’d even turned sixteen. She’d grab him right there and then, hold onto him and never let him go.

He moved to the door, stopping in front of it and turned around. ‘I forgot something.’ With three giant steps he was back by Sofia’s side. He placed his hands on her back, drew her to him, and his lips found hers. The softness of his skin, the sweetness of his breath, made her head spin and her heart pound her chest, and she hung onto him for fear that her legs wouldn’t hold her up.

When she kissed him back, groaning with pleasure, he held her tighter and ignited the fire in her with the passion of the young man she once knew. It was as if the world had suddenly stopped spinning around, as if nothing else existed, only Antonio, and she had become every image of him she’d ever seen, every word she’d heard him say, every scent, every sensation that had come from him. She was his hand in her hair as they’d stood together in the shade of the church, his smile as they’d counted the stars in the sky, his green-grey gaze meeting hers as he’d climbed off his Vespa. She was the knowing look they’d exchanged at the bakery, her wet feet when she’d crossed the flooded road to see him, his fingers brushing against hers as he’d handed her the gelato he’d bought for her. And now she was his arms cradling her when she’d hurt her ankle, his gift of flowers and cakes, his lips on hers in the hospital, and everything they’d lived since they’d met again as adults.

Sofia’s past had found the present, all in a kiss.
